The five-finger rule is a strategy from a student agency to help early reader students choose a personal reading with the perfect difficulty for each one independently.

Pick a Book: Choose one from your classroom library.

Open a Page: Flip to any random page.

Start Reading: Read word by word.

Count: Raise a finger for each word you don't know or can't say.

Check: At the end of the paragraph, see how many fingers you have up.

Decide: Use your finger count to see if this book is a good fit.

Objective: Identify regular verbs in past tense - Read comprehensively

Depending on the reading level, grade, and level of autonomy of the students, the text can be read aloud by the teacher, students can take turns to read aloud, or it can be read and answered independently.
After reading the story, tell students to look for all the regular verbs in past tense (remind them about the "ed") and circle them.
Then, tell them to answer the questions on the second page. 

We paste this file on the students table and it helps them when they want to write or said numbers using hundreds, tens and ones. This gives then more autonomy so the teacher doesn’t have to write them every time it is needed.

Objective: Understand and follow written directions - Apply prepositions correctly.

Students look at the map and map key to understand the symbols. Then, they read the instructions and draw pictures on the map, correctly applying prepositions. This worksheet can be done individually by students, or it can be done together as a class, with the teacher's help, depending on the grade and level of autonomy of the class.

Objective: Understand a story - Understand and answer "Wh" questions.

After they have watched and listened to the story once or twice, have them read the questions, answer them and draw a picture.
Depending on the grade and level of autonomy of the class, students may answer it on their own, or they may do it as a class with the teacher's help.

This project is to be completed during all the unit of Solar System.
You might want to complement it with videos and Power Points, or any other source of information, because the idea is for students to take notes of thing that catch their attention about the Sun and Planets, and in the end they just colour and "build" the fact fan. If you want students to research, this is also a perfect project to get students started on it, but it needs to be really guided and give them the sources of information, to make sure they are reliable.

Both booklets are organized in such a way that students have to do exactly the same thing in both, but the "format" of the final project changes. Students were also very enthusiastic about having the option to choose their final project.
