I gave my students a template of a top hat and they had to add as many words as they knew with the same vowel sound. The group with the tallest hat won.
They also had to spell the word or make a sentence with it.

Long and short vowels sounds
In this worksheet, you can practice the sound and the writing of some words with long and short vowel sounds. For some kids, this is an easy way to learn English because they understand how to say and write sounds at the same time.

Hello, teachers!

Hice esta actividad como proyecto con mis niños de primer grado de primaria. Ellos debían identificar los sonidos vocales cortos aislados y en las palabras para poder agruparlos.

Inicié esta actividad cantando con ellos esta canción para recordarles que las letras en inglés tienen "nombre" (sonido largo) y "apellido" (sonido corto). Luego, les dije que las palabras que tenemos en los círculos eran los miembros de cada una de las familias, pero que estaban revueltos y que ellos debían organizarlos con su familia de acuerdo a su sonido vocal.

La actividad les resultó muy divertida y entretenida.

Muy útil para que los alumnos visualicen que cada vocal tiene diferentes combinaciones que generan los Long Vowel Sounds.

You can try with different topics: suffixes, vowel sounds, synonyms, etc. 
We made a peacock adverb. I asked my students what question they wanted to answer: when? how? where? or how often? Then, they wrote different adverbs that answered to their question. Encourage them to make sentences using the adverbs. 

I made this worksheet to practise the silent E. First, you could show a video (Check the one I uploaded from the Bazillions). Then, give them the worksheet and ask them to rewrite the words by adding the silent E. There is an example.
Don't forget to emphasize how the vowel sound changes.

Yo start showing them the chart with the vowels and different words. Give them some time to clasify each word with the correct vowel and then check the activity together.
