Objective: Understand the importance of symbols.

Have your students watch the video "Signs Are Everywhere". You can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nbuhXghL6A

After they have watched the video once or twice, discuss with them about the importance of signs, tell them to give examples about signs they know, their meaning and get them to tell you why they are important. Then, tell them to watch the video again, and to pick 4 signs they didn't know before. Finally, tell them to draw the signs and write the meaning.

Objective: Understand synonyms as different words that have a similar meaning.

Once they have learnt that synonyms are different words with similar meanings, students apply their knowledge by identifying the synonyms for each word in the chart.

I use this PPT to introduce synonyms. I try to elicit the meaning of synonyms by giving different examples (not just the ones in the PPT). There is a game the students can play by clicking on the correct answers. If you want to add more commands to the PPT, just use the action buttons. 

Objective: Understand that some words, when combined, can form a new words with a totally different meaning. 

The goal of this activity is for students to match the eggs with simple words with their corresponding "compound word chick", and understand the meaning of both, the simple words and the compound words. 

Set a timer and have your students try to discover the secret sentences as fast as possible. Then, have them draw a picture to represent the sentences, to make sure they understood the meaning. The first student to correctly discover the sentences and draw the correct pictures, wins!
It is a different and fun way to practice writing sentences. Students really enjoy competitions and timed challenges.

Objective: Become familiar with the vocabulary of the unit. 

This worksheet can be a "warm up" to begin the unit of light and sound, since there are many words that children have never heard, and they will naturally ask "What is the meaning of...?" so it is a good way to introduce the vocabulary of the unit, check how much the students know about it and start discussing some of the concepts.

It can also be used at the end of the unit, as a "challenge" or competition, like for example, who can find more than 15 words in less than 7 minutes.

This packet includes 1 spelling for each group of tricky words (plus the TW lists). Students have to complete sentences with tricky words. This way TW are used in context and students can understand better their meaning. Great source if you teach using the Jolly Phonics program.
